🤔 Record labels are suing AI startups
And where is copyright law going.

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” — Bob Marley
The record labels must not be feeling that music any more because they sure are feeling that pain. Especially, in their wallets.

Music is regularly hit by technological advances. And AI, is no exception. New lawsuits are underway.

I’ve long been of the opinion that US regulators would have to make a decision on copyright law. Either we’re enforcing it or we’re not.
At the moment, people across the world are looking at Japan’s AI policy and questioning if it’s the way forward or not.
Japan ignores copyright for all AI models:
“Japan’s gen AI policy permits AI models to process any data “regardless of whether it is for non-profit or commercial purposes, whether it is an act other than reproduction, or whether it is content obtained from illegal sites or otherwise.” - excerpt from Manage Engine blog found here.
In the USA market, this approach would probably not go over well. As far as I can see, regulators have 4 options:
Protect all copyrights and destroy every AI start up in the market.
Protect the big players’ copyrights and screw the little guys.
Open it up like Japan and screw everyone equal but push forward equally
Develop a why for people to get paid for their copyright when used in a a model and decrease the profits going to the Gen AI startups.
