We live in a pivotal time in history. More so than I think people raise. It has nothing to do with how will choose to work with technology, but how we will choose to live with it.
As an avid scifi fan, I see it as the battle of the imagination. Take the techno-philosophy of The Expanse vs. Total Recall. The Expanse largely chose the tech should exist outside of the body route. In the picture above, the phone is something external to the user. Humans still police humans because only one’s equal in creation should. However, in Total Recall, the phone is implanted into the hand of the user. It turns the body into an always on source of utility. And as such, takes the stance that a Robot can be above some humans.
So, what does even have to do with AI?

As an avid sci-fi fan, I see it as the battle of the imagination. Take the techno-philosophy of The Expanse vs. Total Recall. In The Expanse, tech exists outside of the user's body. In the picture above, the phone is something external to the user. Humans still police humans because only one’s equal in creation should. However, in Total Recall, the phone is implanted into the hand of the user. It turns the body into an "always on" source of utility. And as such, takes the stance that a Robot can be above some humans.
So, what does this even have to do with AI?
Everything. The sorts of AI technology belief and developmental direction are different. The AI must mimic the human neurological system to be able to act in conjunction with it. It may even need to adapt it as well. Getting to that reality will take going in particular research directions. Those will inform computer architectures, determine which algorithms get funding, and the creation of data centers.
If you didn’t know this, in the US, we are expanding the creation of data centers all over the country. Other communities around the world are already complaining of poor air quality and higher cost of electricity and water bills. But we need to beat everyone in the AI race , so is the right path of imagination.
On the other hand, China is deciding that computer architecture is outdated. Since we now know what we need for AI , we can redesign the system architecture more effectively. This will reduce the computational requirements for GPUs and storage, and the over all cost of AI. They have a different sort of imagination for the future.
The US used to be a great place of invention and excitement. But now, I wonder if we are truly pushing the envelop or just coasting by on our wealth?
And then I think , hmm , have writers failed us? Are we stuck because the genre that sparked the first wave of tech innovation hasn’t written about newer or more indie ideas? Have writers been remiss in provoking a new generation of creativity?
So many questions. But I do know this, we are making decisions that will affect generations. I hope we make them well.
Interesting
Vogue used an AI model in it’s print edition. It was only an ad by the fashion brand, Guess, but I found the decision interesting. Having grown on up in the heyday of Tyra, Project Runway, and the Devil Wears Prada, I really wonder where fashion media and brands will go in the coming decade. What will happen to “top models” and designers a like?
Creepy or Not
Someone needs to write a humor movie on this. I got the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.
Put yourself in my brain for a minute. You’re reading the news, and you see this headline, “Australian lawyer apologizes for AI-generated errors in murder case”.
With my over active imagination, I put myself on trial in an instant. I’m in the court room, and I know I didn’t do it but there’s like quotes and evidence that d not exist, and now I’m all locked up. Trying to remember episodes of Prison Break which I barely watched. And figure out my epic escape from jail and uncovering the truth of my technological setup.
Now, that’s not what happened obviously, but it sure creeped me out.

P.S. I need my royalty on this horror flick.
