The things people do with AI technologies should stop surprising me at some point.

But apparently, I’m more naive than I thought.

AI will not solve your loneliness problem. The feeling of no one caring about you won’t go away because a constructed image of a person you wish was around ā€˜speaks’ to you.

We’ve had AI girlfriends, AI porn, and now AI dead parents and grandparents.

There’s no shame in being lonely. I’m lonely most days but I’m making more of an effort not to be a recluse. I’m thinking of making myself go rock climbing or do Brazilian Jujitsu once or twice a week. I haven’t even tried a pet yet. So an AI avatar was never on my mind but I must admit it would be more cost effective.

Creepy though.

So now, I find myself trying to figure out how to tell my mother to update her will to include ā€˜don’t turn me into a creepy AI avatar and delete all digital data’. People have never had to consider post-death privacy violations before. Well, Queen Victoria did because she’s a royal and many of her diaries were promptly burned by her daughter. But for us common folk, no one cared until now.

And I must say, it seems like an ethics violation to me. We shouldn’t do things just because we can do it.

Not only that but technology has exacerbated mental health issues — not helped them.

We’ve never lived further apart from our communities before. It seems to me that we need to adjust our economy of work to fit our needs. Not try to poorly bandage them with the newest hype.

I’m totally betting on the long-term failure of these startups. Dating apps are failing in the long-term and these will go the same way. They don’t build connections.

And think for a moment what would happen if these are hacked? Which they will be? You can convince the masses to do things they wouldn’t otherwise do.

It’s time got back in person. Who knows, I may start hosting meetups at my favorite Dallas bakery. Make a few friends. Build something cool. Thoughts?

Your digital activities can show how depressed you are. But I don’t think a lack of mental health professionals is the problem. I think the lack of a community of friends is.
